Stu's rantings on the falling standards of education negates the need for me to do so. His rants carry so much more weight than mine, and unlike me, he get's to the crux of the matter We aren't teaching them how to think..
In this post he throws out a challenge to his readers to find the squareroot of 1.5 using only a compass and straight edge. I'm more than a bit unhappy with how long i took to do it . Gah! It must be due to the atrophy of my grey matter by having to teach XML. But, here's my limited little solution, for whatever it's worth.
It was on my mind to throw this problem at some of my students, but eventually decided that I probably could not take the aggravation. This might be what Ed calls learned helplessness . Who knows, maybe they'd have surprised me.
It helps to read Stu's rants. It also drives home the point that I'm a bit underqualified to rant.
